Getting QWERTY Japanese input in Linux Mint

 This is a tutorial to get started typing in japanese using a QWERTY keyboard on Linux Mint Cinnamon.

In [System Settings > Preferences] you will find the Input Method app (You may also directly launch it from the applications menu)



Launching the app will present you with a menu for various languages, select Japanese and click [Install]



Then, set the Input method framework to Fcitx.



Logout  from your sessions and log back in.
You will now see a keyboard icon on your system tray, right click it and choose [configure]


In the input method tab, click the [+] button.

Unselect [Only Show Current Language] and search for Mozc, select it and press OK


You can now use [CTRL + SPACE] to switch between your main language and Japanese input
